Tired of overwhelm?

Is overwhelm getting the best of you?
Here’s how to turn your state of mental fatigue around.

Overwhelm happens to be something that I specialize in. The reasons we become overwhelmed can vary, person to person - but I’ve learned in my twenty plus years of coaching and consulting that you can get back on track, feeling in control of your circumstances vs. your circumstances in control of you with the following 5 practices.

1 Prioritize and Organize

When feeling overwhelmed, start by identifying the most important tasks and responsibilities. Create a to-do list and prioritize items based on urgency and importance. Break down larger tasks into smaller, manageable steps. This approach helps you focus on one thing at a time and prevents you from feeling swamped by the big picture. Try to accomplish only the most important tasks first. Resist the urge to do the easy bits until the priorities are complete.

2 Practice Time Management

Time management is crucial for combating overwhelm. Allocate specific time blocks for different tasks and avoid multitasking, as it can decrease productivity and increase stress. Use techniques like the Pomodoro Technique (working in focused intervals with short breaks) to maintain your energy and concentration.

3 Learn to say “No”

Overwhelm often stems from taking on too many commitments. Learn to set boundaries and say no when you genuinely can't take on more tasks or responsibilities. Focus on what aligns with your priorities and any decline additional requests that may lead to excessive stress. And remember,  saying “No’ means you make room for the right "Yeses ".

4 Practice Self-Care

Take care of yourself physically and mentally. Ensure you get enough sleep, eat well-balanced meals, and engage in regular exercise. Incorporate stress-reduction activities into your routine, such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, walks in nature, or hobbies that you enjoy. Self-care helps you build resilience and cope better with overwhelming situations. If you’re really pushed to the limit, step away and do something that resonates on this list immediately. You’ll return with more focus and ability to perform at your best.

And finally -

5 Reach Out for Support

Don't be afraid to ask for help. Reach out to friends, family, and colleagues when you feel overwhelmed. Talking about your feelings can provide relief and may even offer valuable insights or assistance. Further, sharing your burdens with coaches like myself can help you recognize some blind spots in the way you approach things. Reach out HERE if overwhelm has the best of you and you’re ready for this to end.

There are many stressors in the world, especially now. You don’t have to go it alone.

It’s important to recognize what is and isn’t worth giving your precious time, energy and focus to so that you can bounce back faster when the heat is turned up.

Till next time -

Here’s to you going Hulk on the pressures coming your way!
