The Mindset Reset.

Does the looming end of summer have you feeling gloomy?

With Labor Day approaching  here in the US, I’m hearing from many friends and clients that they’re struggling to stay positive. There is just this intensity about the return to school, routines, and structure that can feel suffocating. Suddenly, there’s more focus on deadlines, deliverables, and important decisions.

There is a certain intensity that can creep in this time of year and, with it, a more negative mindset. Before you begin to spiral, decide to take control and set yourself up for a better end of year. Here are some valuable reminders to keep you buoyed above the stormy waters.

1. Embrace a Growth Mindset

Decide to shift your perspective around challenges and setbacks. Instead of seeing them as roadblocks, view them as opportunities for growth and learning. Remember, every obstacle you overcome is a chance to develop new skills and refine your capabilities.

2. Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness techniques, such as deep breathing and meditation, can help you stay grounded and centered amidst workplace (and life’s) stress. Set aside a few minutes each day to clear your mind, refocus your thoughts, and regain your sense of calm.

3. Cultivate a Gratitude Practice

Make a daily habit of identifying three things you’re thankful for. You can write them in a journey or just recognize them in a paused moment at day’s end. This practice can shift your focus from what's going wrong to what's going right, which fosters a more positive outlook.

4. Build a Supportive Network

Surround yourself with colleagues and friends who radiate positivity. Seek out individuals who uplift your spirits and encourage your professional growth. Who you spend your time with plays a significant role in shaping your mindset.

5. Take Breaks and Prioritize Self-Care

Burnout WILL fuel negative thinking. Make self-care a priority by taking short breaks throughout the day, engaging in activities you enjoy. Get outside and grab some fresh air (and a fresh perspective) when things get tense.  (News flash: Your ego is playing tricks on you. You can’t afford NOT to create more work-life balance; it’s critical to improved productivity.)

6. Set Realistic Goals

Ambitious goals are fantastic, but ensure they're actually attainable. Unrealistic expectations can lead not just to disappointment but also burnout, anxiety, and a damaged self-worth. Break your goals into smaller, manageable steps that are attainable. And remember to celebrate your progress along the way.

7. Celebrate Your Achievements

Speaking of progress… It’s really important to acknowledge and celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small they may seem. Recognizing your successes will  boost your self-esteem and keep you motivated. And it tells your brain, “this is great! I want more of this!” - which helps provide more motivation for more success.

8. Initiate Positive Self-Talk

Become aware of negative self talk and commit to replacing it with constructive and affirming statements. Treat yourself with the same kindness and encouragement you would offer to a friend.

9. Create a Positive Workspace

Personalize your workspace with items that inspire and uplift you. Incorporate plants, artwork, or motivational quotes to infuse positivity into your surroundings. For those working virtually, ensure your view is inspirational. If possible, arrange your desk so that your view looks out to nature. This can make a world of difference when you spend countless hours working from home.

10. Focus on Solutions

When faced with challenges, shift your energy from dwelling on the problem to brainstorming solutions. This proactive approach empowers you to take control and actively contribute to positive outcomes. (If you MUST wallow a bit in the negative energy, at least set a timer and only allow yourself to stay there for 10 minutes. When the alarm goes off, immediately turn your focus to finding solutions to your issues.)

Remember, transitioning to a more positive mindset is a journey that takes time and effort. Be patient with yourself as you implement these strategies and don't hesitate to seek support when needed.

Remember - positive mindset gives you power over your circumstances versus the other way around. You got this!
