Find your Zone of Genius!

Do you find yourself often searching for more meaning in life?

It’s not uncommon to wonder if you’re actually on the right track to experiencing fulfillment.

In my line of work, clients frequently ask me in private how they should go about finding work that lights them up. More than not, the folks I speak with are unhappy and searching for more joy and purpose .

With this in mind, I’m offering today some insights that have helped my clients through the years to uncover their own inner gold – something I like to refer to as their ‘Zone of Genius”.

Here are 8 steps to mining for your own unique purpose.

1. Reflect on your passions and values: Begin by asking yourself what truly brings you joy, energizes you, and captures your interest. Reflect on your natural talents, the activities that make you lose track of time, and that lights you up. Understanding your core values will help you align your purpose with what matters most to you. Take an oversized sheet of paper and draw circles on it, one representing each of the passions and values that you identify. Color them yellow. The truth is, you deserve to do work that you love and deeply enjoy. If your work isn’t checking these boxes, it most definitely isn’t your purpose.

2. Explore your strengths and skills: Take stock of your skills, strengths, and experiences that set you apart. Identify the areas where you excel and find fulfillment. Consider both your personal and professional accomplishments, as they often provide clues about your unique purpose and contribution to the world. Now make circles on the same chart for each of these skills. Color them green. Take note if any of the circles overlap or repeat from your first list.

3. Embrace self-discovery: Engage in self-reflection practices such as journaling, meditation, or talking with a trusted friend or mentor about your unwitnessed strengths. Embrace the process of exploring your thoughts, emotions, and aspirations. Stay curious, open-minded, and willing to challenge your assumptions and beliefs. Self-discovery is an ongoing journey, so be patient and gentle with yourself. You might use self-discovery to unearth more areas of strength you overlooked in the first round. Add any news ideas to your chart and keep your list growing.

4. Seek new experiences: Step out of your comfort zone and try new things. Venture into unexplored territories, whether they are hobbies, courses, or travel destinations. Novel experiences broaden your perspective, expand your skills, and expose you to different cultures and ways of thinking. These encounters can spark inspiration and lead you closer to your life purpose.

5. Pay attention to synchronicities: Notice the signs that you seem to get magically. I call these “little nudges from The Universe.” Sometimes, the universe sends subtle or not-so-subtle hints to guide us on our path. Pay attention to recurring themes, meaningful encounters, and opportunities that seem to align with your values and passions. Trust your intuition and follow these breadcrumbs.

6. Serve others: Engaging in acts of service can provide valuable insights into your purpose. Volunteer for causes that resonate with you or extend a helping hand to those in need. By making a positive impact on others' lives, you may discover a deep sense of fulfillment and realize how you can contribute to the betterment of society.

7. Embrace growth and adaptability: Remember that your life purpose may evolve over time. Embrace personal growth, be adaptable, and remain open to new possibilities. Your purpose may shift as you gain new experiences and wisdom. Stay connected with your inner self and be willing to redefine your purpose as you evolve. (Oh and - be patient. It may be that you’re just not ready to step into your calling until you’ve done more work.)

8. Seek support: Uncovering your life purpose is not a solitary journey. Seek support from friends, family, mentors or coaches (like me)  who can offer guidance and encouragement. Join communities or groups with like-minded individuals who share similar interests. Collaborating with others on similar quests can provide inspiration, motivation, and valuable insights.

Remember, the path to discovering your life purpose is unique to you. It's a deeply personal journey that requires self-reflection, exploration, and a willingness to embrace change. Stay true to yourself, trust the process, and be patient as you uncover the beautiful tapestry that is your personal work of art to gift to this planet.
