Cherish your chores

Do you find your daily routines and tasks a bore? 

Do you feel that you are walking through life asleep at the wheel? 

Have your days become monotonous?

You might be surprised to know that how you interact with your daily routines speaks volumes for the amount of bliss you can expect to have (or not have) in life. 

If you want to experience more joy and pure contentment, begin by bringing more joy and contentment to the tasks that are required of you daily. 

James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, articulated this notion well. 

"Many people view their habits and routines as obstacles or, at the very least, obligations to get through. Making the morning coffee, driving your kids to the next activity, preparing the next meal—we often see our routines as chores to be completed. 

But these are not moments to be dismissed. They are life. Making coffee can be a peaceful ritual—perhaps even a fulfilling one—if done with care rather than rushed to completion. It’s about the amount of attention you devote to these simple moments, and whether you choose to appreciate them or bulldoze through them on the way to the next task. “

Can you ENjoy (bring joy into) your smallest of tasks? 

One of the most powerful ways I’ve learned to do this is by using the phrase “I get to…” before starting a chore. When you shift your mindset from “I have to…” to “I get to…” and focus on the positive aspects of the task, it’s surprising how easy it is to feel grateful and blessed. 

“I get to do the dishes…because I was blessed with food to eat.”

“I get to take my kids to school…because I am fortunate that they have a place to go to grow their minds.” 

“I get to do my report…because I have a job that provides me with a steady income.”

“I get to workout…because I have a healthy body that craves activity to stay fit.”

Simple notion. Powerful results.  

Play with this technique for a week and discover the profound lift it can provide.
